Bringing early detection where it matters. One community at a time.
Eyenuk was honored to join forces with the outstanding team from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) at the 2026 Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska. Held annually at a different host ranch across the state, the Cattlemen’s Ball is one of Nebraska’s premier charity events. Its mission is to raise funds for cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center while supporting local community health and wellness initiatives across the state.
As part of the event's health tent outreach, Eyenuk worked alongside UNMC clinicians to provide rapid, AI-powered diabetic eye screenings using our EyeArt® technology.
Supported by Dr. Krueger, Dr. Armstrong, and the dedicated UNMC clinical team, 27 event attendees were screened for signs of diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of preventable vision loss among working-age adults.
Instant insights and meaningful impact
The day kicked off early with a steady flow of participants visiting the health screening area. Thanks to the autonomous capabilities of the EyeArt® system, attendees received fast, reliable evaluations directly at the point of care.
Encouragingly, no referable diabetic retinopathy was detected among those screened. However, the attending UNMC clinicians noted potential signs of cataracts in a few participants and provided appropriate guidance for routine follow-up care.
Why community outreach matters
Diabetic retinopathy often develops without early warning signs or painful symptoms, making regular retinal imaging critical. Yet, for many living in rural communities, routine visits to eye care specialists require long travel times and significant planning.
According to data cited by the CDC, major eye conditions like cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy affect over 41% of Medicare beneficiaries, accounting for billions in healthcare costs annually. Bringing advanced screening directly to community gatherings like the Cattlemen’s Ball lowers the barrier to care, catching potential issues before they lead to permanent sight loss.
Looking ahead
Greg Russell, Head of Clinical Development at Eyenuk, was grateful to play a key role in this inspiring event and support efforts aimed at preventing avoidable vision loss. Eyenuk looks forward to continuing our partnership with UNMC and participating in many more community-based screening initiatives in the future.
